Two Banks County High School students died during the past two days, one following a car wreck and another after a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Courtney Alicia Phagan, 18, Maysville, died Friday after being injured in a wreck that happened at 2:43 p.m. Aug. 18 on Georgia Highway 11 (U.S. Highway 129) 0.5 miles north of W.J. Dills Road near Jefferson. W.J. Dills Road is located between Interstate 85 and U.S. 129 Business.
Phagan was traveling south in the left lane on Hwy. 11 when her vehicle left the roadway going off the left shoulder, and Phagan overcorrected. The vehicle began to turn clockwise and overturn. The vehicle came to rest upright in the median of the four-lane, divided highway. Phagan was ejected from the vehicle as it overturned.
Phagan suffered severe head injuries.

In the other death, a 15-year-old Lula boy died Saturday after shooting himself in a bathroom at Banks County High School early Friday morning. According to authorities, the student died early Saturday morning.
Not motive has yet been discussed about the event.
BCHS senior injured in car crash in Jefferson
A single-vehicle crash on Saturday afternoon near Jefferson seriously injured a Banks County High School senior.

Phagan, driving a 2002 Ford Explorer SUV, was traveling south in the left lane on Hwy. 11 when her vehicle left the roadway going off the left shoulder, and Phagan overcorrected.

Phagan was ejected from the vehicle as it overturned.
“Witnesses said they saw Vehicle 1 (Phagan’s SUV) run off the roadway and overturn after entering the median,” a GSP spokesperson said.
Phagan, who was transported by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, suffered severe head injuries.

Fatality in Banks County wreck
A Commerce man was killed Monday morning in a one-vehicle wreck on Hwy. 51 South.
Albert Lee Likens II, 56, Commerce, was driving a 2001 Mack truck, owned by Waste Management of Homer, when he left the roadway around 7:46 a.m. and his vehicle rolled several times.
There were no passengers in the truck.

Icy road conditions keep law enforcement busy in the county

Tyler Bush, 17, Commerce, was a passenger in a Jeep when he accidentally fell out of it. Bush fell onto the road from the vehicle while it was traveling 30 to 35 miles per hour.
Bush was taken by LifeFlight to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
