It’s a rock hound’s dream come true. It’s a place where people come to stay one week or longer. There are lodges and campsites; there is a cafeteria, and there are dedicated hobbyists who make it possible for many others to enjoy the fruits of their knowledge.
The Williams Holland School of Lapidary Arts, in Young Harris, offers a wide variety of classes on how to turn rough gems into family keepsakes. People come from near and far to learn the trade or to get more proficient at the art of cutting and polishing stone. While it may have begun as a necessity to make tools and weapons from stones, now it has evolved as into much more.
We stopped by on a recent trip to northeast Georgia and were amazed at what transpires at the school situated near the Georgia-North Carolina border. I was so impressed by the magnificent creations made from cutting and polishing gemstones, then setting them into metalwork of their own creation. [Full Story »]

For a fun-filled ‘stay-cation’ head to Athens
BY ANGELA GARY
With a boutique hotel in the heart of downtown, an amazing food scene and an art gallery on the University of Georgia campus, Athens makes the perfect “stay-cation” that is a short drive away but still far enough away for a get-away.
We made Hotel Indigo our headquarters and fit in a food tour with stops at The Place, Georgia Theatre and Creature Comforts, dinner at 5&10 and a morning exploring the Georgia Museum on the University of Georgia campus.
FOOD TOUR
Our first stop on the Georgia Food Tours with Mary Charles Howard, which is offered six times each year, was The Place, which is owned by Allen Pope. It offers Southern comfort food and the fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and collard greens are a great choice. We also tasted flank steak, mashed potatoes and asparagus. Everything was perfectly prepared. [Full Story »]

Baldwin fire chief recovering from injuries
Baldwin Fire Chief Joe Roy, 46, is recovering, at Emory Hospital, Atlanta, from injures he suffered when he was struck by a truck on Saturday morning.
Just before 11 a.m. on July 25, a 2012 Toyota Tundra pickup truck, driven by R.W. Nored, 70, Dahlonega, struck Roy while he was taking part in a boot drive in Habersham County.
The accident happened on Georgia Highway 384 (Duncan Bridge Road) at Mud Creek Road. Roy was standing on the centerline when Nored reportedly drifted over and the left front of his truck struck Roy from behind. The impact knocked Roy approximately 15 feet, according to the Georgia State Patrol report.
Roy was transported by Air Life helicopter to Grady for treatment of his injuries.
On Sunday afternoon at a news conference at the Baldwin Police Department, Baldwin Mayor Jerry Neace said Roy suffered a severe laceration to his right arm that cut his tricep tendon, a broken left shoulder blade, a severe gash in the back of his head and a minor tear in his spleen.
The accident is under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
Neace said Roy was helping with a boot drive to benefit the honor guard for public safety personnel.
“I want to thank all the departments that have stepped in to help,” Neace said.
Neace said the GSP, Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, Habersham County Fire Department, Hall County Fire Department, City of Cornelia, City of Demorest, Banks County Fire Department, and many others had offered their help and support since the accident.
