Hardman Farm near Helen open for tours
BY AMANDA MYLER
As a young girl, my family and I often made the short journey to Helen for the day. I have so many fond memories of eating cheese and crackers and drinking apple cider from Betty’s Country Store. I loved wading around in the river as the water meandered across the rocks. We also visited the local flea markets and made some life- long friends. Life was simple and I loved every part of it.
One of my fondest memories of our journey to Helen was passing by the old Indian Mound. I was always mesmerized by it wondering what was inside that mound. Why was there a little gazebo on top of it? Daddy often stopped on the side of the rode so I could admire this ancient mound. Across from the Indian mound sits a stunning home. I have always wanted to go inside that home and learn about the people who once lived there. I loved the small house in the back with a walkway leading to the main home. [Full Story »]

Coal ash from North Carolina taken to Homer landfill
Duke Energy is now hauling coal ash from North Carolina to Banks County to be disposed of at R&B Landfill on Bennett Road in Homer.
The first truck of excavated coal ash left the retired Riverbend Power Plant near Charlotte, N.C., on May 21 marking the beginning of the end for ash storage at that site as Duke Energy relocates ash to a fully lined landfill.
The Riverbend excavation will start with 10 truckloads a day to pilot the process and minimize impacts on neighbors. Ash will be sent to the fully lined landfill in Homer and will be transported moist, in covered and washed trucks, to control dust, Duke Energy officials report.
The Banks County landfill is an interim step as the company works with an outside company to permit two fully lined structural fill projects proposed for North Carolina's Chatham and Lee counties, Duke officials report.
