Exploring Stone Mountain Park
‘Sky ride,’ train excursion among family-friendly activities offered
BY ANGELA GARY
Taking the “sky ride” to the top of Stone Mountain is one of the highlights of a visit to the park that has been a favorite destination for families for more than 50 years.
The top attraction at Stone Mountain Park is The Summit Skyride. A high-speed Swiss cable car provides a stunning view of the Confederate Memorial Carving as it transports guests more than 825 feet above ground to the top of Stone Mountain. From the top, visitors can experience amazing views of the Atlanta skyline, the Appalachian Mountains and scenes from up to 60 miles away.
On a recent visit, my nephews, ages 13 and 7, both listed the sky ride as their favorite activity of the day, although the train ride and duck boat excursion were also big hits with the boys. [Full Story »]

BOC takes citizen input on state patrol issue; no action taken on proposal
More than 100 people attended a Banks County Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday night with 11 speaking in support of a state patrol post locating in the county. No citizens spoke in in opposition to the proposal but two commissioners, David Duckett and Danny Maxwell, spoke on their concerns with a state patrol post locating in the county. At an earlier meeting when the proposal was presented, chairman Jimmy Hooper spoke in opposition to a state patrol unit in the county. Commissioners Sammy Reece and Charles Turk support the proposal.
A vote was not taken at the Tuesday night meeting. A vote will be taken if one of the commissioners places the item on the agenda of an upcoming meeting. None of the commissioners indicated at the Tuesday night meeting whether they plan to put the issue on the agenda for a BOC meeting for a vote.
The cost for locating a facility in the county is estimated to be $700,000 in county funds. The remainder of the $1.4 million for the building would be state funds and labor.
Among those speaking was William Reems, who stated, “Public safety is a publicly funded entity that is driven by the will of the people. We, as citizens, have the right to fund the programs we see fit for our own security…See this course of business through without the interjection of petty political agendas, let the will of the people be found and make a wise investment for our county’s future.”
Sheriff Carlton Speed also spoke in favor of a state patrol unit locating in the county, stating, “It is a win-win situation. I think it is a great idea.”
See the April 22 issue of The Banks County News for more in-depth coverage from the meeting with comments from the commissioners and more citizens who spoke.

Four in 20 businesses found selling alcohol to minors
Employees from four businesses were caught selling alcohol to minors after a local and state investigation was conducted last week in Banks County.
Banks County Sheriff’s Office investigators, along with agents from the Georgia Department of Revenue (Alcohol & Tobacco Division), conducted an underage alcohol sales operation on Monday, March 29, according to a BCSO release. A total of 20 businesses were visited, according to the release.
In the course of the investigation, underage teens attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages. Of the restaurants, bars, convenience stores and package stores visited, only four sold to the minors. Those consisted of Commerce Lucky Store, 4 Way Country Store, Longhorn Steakhouse and Outback Steakhouse. The employee from each establishment that made the sale was charged with selling alcohol to underage minors (O.C.G.A. 3-3-23).
“We are very pleased with our local businesses,” said Sheriff Carlton Speed, in a statement. “Not only do we continue to educate our businesses on state law, we can prove the vast majority are abiding by them.”
