Joe Gailey was named recreation director by the Banks County Board of Commissioners Tuesday night.

Commissioner Charles Turk made the motion to hire Gailey and Joe Barefoot, Ernest Rogers and chairman Milton Dalton voted along with him. Commissioner Rickey Cain was not present for the vote.

The BOC interviewed seven applicants for the recreation director post, including Gailey, Blakely Crumley, Tyson Culberson, Jerry Loftice, Ben Dillard, Philip Cronic and Stephen Cain.

Gailey has more than 20 years of experience in public recreation and formerly served as the parks and recreation director in White and Stephens counties. He has been the director of recreation and public works in Hardeville, S.C., since 2006.

The BOC plans to offer Gailey two salary options — $40,000 with the use of a house owned by the county as his personal residence or $42,000 without the use of the house.

I'm pleasantly surprised! The BOC actually hired someone outside of "The Good Ol' Boys"! Now, I'm anxiously waiting to see if they let him do his job.

I give the commissioners a start, but they must not try to micro manage the rec. dept. They must let him do that by himself. I know some parents will object to him running it his way and all kids will not be treated equal for all kids are not created equal but we have to keep politics out of it for it to succeed.

I disagree. If the parents are paying equal, their kids deserve to be treated equal.

The commissioners did a great job at listening to the community. We need a rec director than can bring change to a recreation system that can no longer compete against the surrounding communities. Our kids are arriving at the middle and high school with limited athletic skills and weak work ethics. Although the rec department cannot fix everything, it can lay a foundation that is desperately needed for our sports programs. The rec department must be restructured to meet all the needs of our kids, from strong athletes who want to compete to kids who are just playing for fun. I hope Mr. Gailey can begin a change in the right direction.

I am so sick of hearing how bad the rec depaartment is or what a bad job Cronic has done. First of all if you don't work with your child how can the rec dept make them into Great Athletes in 3 or 4 hours a weeks. Second of all if you would spend some of your time as a Volunteer instead of always complaning your child might have a better attitude. Not only about sports but about life. Third I challenge ANYBODY to find a BETTER MAN THAN CRONIC. His only problem is he cared about every child and thought their parents wouldn't stab him in the back. I just wondered how many of you could have pleased every parent in county 24/7. Good Luck with Mr Gailey I hope he is half the man Cronic is.

I hope all of you are correct. Actaully, a good rec director will create more opportunities for the kids. HE will create rules that are consistent and not changed or adjusted, "because I say it's this way" and he will look for the safety of the kids. In the past the members of the rec dept would come in late (noon or so) because they are working until all practices are over (8-9pm) and before the kids could all be picked up the rec employee would be turning all the lights out leaving kids and hopefully a concerned coach in the dark waiting for a late parent. It's sad that we got to the point that the unpaid coaches had more concern and patience for the kids than a paid employee that's just going thru the motions of a job.
No kid will be a better athlete just by playing at the rec dept. but they should be given opportunity to learn and develop their skills!!

In all the years of my kids playing sports at the rec department I have never been disappointed in the staff! However, today that changed! As a citizen who pays taxes in Banks County and involves my children in sports at the rec department (and helps coach when needed), I feel it is inappropriate for the the director, Joe Gailey, to not listen to a valid complaint by a parent! Today the 7-8 year old basketball game was called way to tight. These kids need a little room for error. I understand that it was the refs first time reffing for this age group. However when I voiced my concerns to Joe Gaily, our new director, his response to me was as follows: "Well maybe next time I will ref your game and be even worse!" If this is the direction our rec department is headed I don't want my children associated with it!!

Was the game called "tight" as you say on both sides? If so, than I would be fine with that. On the other hand when you play ball at COMMERCE it is ALWAYS called to the advantage of COMMERCE!!!
