The original honeymoon dress worn by Scarlett O’Hara in “Gone With the Wind” is one of the items of memorabilia that is displayed in a museum in Marietta dedicated to the timeless classic.
Touring the museum, taking a trolley ride with a narrated history of the area, dinner on the square and then taking a pedicab ride around downtown and a enjoying a hearty gourmet breakfast were highlights of a recent visit to the charming Southern town.
The Gone With the Wind Museum: Scarlet on the Square has the privately owned collection of Dr. Christopher Sullivan. The museum showcases rare memorabilia from the movie, as well as from Margaret Mitchell. Personal items belonging to cast members, original foreign editions of the novel and other memorabilia can also be found in the museum.
Museum director Connie Sutherland said the “survival” story of “Gone With the Wind” is what makes it so long-lasting and enduring.
“It’s timeless,” she said. “It’s still fascinating to me the way people respond to it.”

DINING OPTIONS
For dinner, we had a wonderful meal at Shillings on the Square, located in a historic building in downtown. The panko crusted grouper with a Dijon cream and mandarian spinach with mashed potatoes was a great choice. The flavors blend so well together. For an appetizer, try the calamari. It was tender and wonderful. As for dessert, both the caramel fudge pecan pie and caramel apple pie are great options.
After dinner, we took a ride around downtown with Marietta Pedicabs. It’s a fun way to end an evening out in Marietta.
For breakfast the next morning, we chose Sugar Cakes, also located on the downtown square. The seafood omelet was huge and flavorful. It had fresh crab meat, scallops and shrimp. Crème Brulee French toast also sounded tempting. Other options include bagels and breakfast crepes.
