Visitors to the North Georgia town of Toccoa will find beautiful countryside, antique shopping and a wonderful history museum on the area.

Toccoa is the Cherokee word for beautiful and waterfalls and mountains are among the spots of beauty. Make your first stop Toccoa Falls College, home of the beautiful 186-foot tall waterfall. It’s a beautiful spot for reflection and relaxation. Next to the falls is Gate Cottage, where lunch is served, on Sundays.

Outdoor adventure found in Toccoa and Stephens County includes hiking trails, kayaking and rappelling. The Tugaloo Cooridtor features the Travelers Rest Historical Site, which has walking paths, hiking trails, biking trails, fishing, birding, wildlife watching and boating.

The historic depot in town houses the welcome center, historical society, chamber of commerce and history museum. The Currahee Military Museum features lots of artifacts and history of the area, as well as information on the “Band of Brothers,” production which was set in Toccoa. Camp Toccoa on Currahee Mountain is where the first World War II paratroopers trained.

The Cornerstone Restaurant on Doyle Street, located inside the Whistlestop Antique Mall, is a fun spot for lunch. Visitors can shop for antiques and then take a break for lunch. The “book ‘em danno panini” is a great choice. The hearty sandwich features black forest ham, provolone cheese, mayo and mustard pressed and grilled and served obn pineapple juice infused bread. For a side, the fried pickles are wonderful.

More than 20 annual events are planned in Toccoa, including a Farmer’s Market, outdoor cinema, Currahee Military Weekend and a fall arts and crafts festival.
