A quaint North Georgia town gives visitors the opportunity to pan for gold, browse in charming shops and find outdoor adventure in a beautiful setting.

It was gold that put Dahlonega on the map as it was the site of the first gold rush in the United States and visitors can get a look at the history of the gold rush at a museum on the downtown square . The Dahlonega Gold Museum is located in the old Lumpkin County courthouse that was built in 1836 and used by the county government through 1965.
Crisson’s Gold Mine is a great stop to get a glimpse of the gold phenomenon. The business was operated by the same family for four generations until Tony and Tammy Ray purchased it in 1990.

At the gold mine, we saw the stamp mill, where they crush sand to get gold out. It’s the only one in operation in Georgia. In back of the site, you can also pan for gold and most everyone finds at least a few flecks of gold.

For more information on the gold mine, go to www.crissongoldmine.com.

On the square, you will find plenty of arts, shopping and dining. It’s a great place to send the day exploring.

Hancock Park, located one block from the square, is a fun place to go for a picnic. Lots of festivals are also held in the park. May through October, music is featured in the park every weekend.

Dahlonega is the heart of Georgia wine country with five wineries located in the area, including Three Sisters Winery, a traditional farm winery. It’s the oldest winery in Dahlonega and the owners are Doug and Sharon Hall. They opened in 1995 and got their first crop in 2000. The tasting room opened in 2001.

“We’re trying to bring wine down to earth,” said Doug, who recommends visitors try one of their wines with Cheetoes. “We make it our mission to educate people about wine.”

Waters’s Mill, located 20 minutes outside of Dahlonega, is a great place for a family get together. The caterers at the site provide homemade food and Southern recipes. Specialties on the menu include hot chicken salad, Vidalia squash casserole, potato salad, been tenderloin and banana pudding.

For more information on visiting Dahlonega, go to www.dahlonega.org. . For information on visiting the North Georgia Mountains, go to www.georgiamountains.org.
