Lula budget passes in 4-1 vote

Lula residents once again dodge paying property taxes in the approved 2010-11 city budget. The Lula City Council approved the budget Monday night despite dissent from one of the council members. District 3 councilmember Mordecai Wilson voted against the $638,000 budget because he wanted to see a three to four percent raise for city employees included for appreciation of their hard work.

“I’m proud of our city … I think the mayor can be a little tight at times,” Wilson said, adding that he has been over the figures and that a raise “wouldn’t break out budget.”

According to Dennis Bergin, city manager, the general fund this fiscal year will come in almost $60,000 under budget and that is because the city council has been “fortunate enough to be good stewards.”

District 1 councilmember Larry Shuler said, “If Milton [the mayor] was not tight, we wouldn’t be where we are right now.”

Mayor Turner said that if the economy picks up the council would be willing to come back to the issue of raises.

During Monday’s meeting, the council approved the $638,299 general fund budget by a 4-1 vote and the $447,600 utilities budget unanimously. The 2010-11 budget is a $9,000 increase over the current operating budget, while the water and sewer budget increases by $52,500. The water and sewer increase comes in part by the city having to budget for an employee to work at the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
