North Georgia residents don't have to travel very far for a ski vacation. Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, is known as one of the oldest ski areas in the South and one of the best for snow-making. This year marks the 48th year for skiing on the mountain.
New this year at the family-friendly resort is a Burton Progression Park that allows entry-level riders the chance to learn to enjoy the jumps and features of a typical terrain park.
Appalachian Ski Mountain is known as family-friendly resort because of its emphasis on its renowned ski school, the French-Swiss Ski College. The resort also offers everything you need to ski or snowboard.
The resort has its latest closing date ever this year - April 11.
In nearby Seven Devils, North Carolina, you will find Hawksnest which features the East Coast's largest snow tubing park. The park features more than 20 lanes across four different areas. Tubing lanes are 400 to 1,000 feet in length, while two conveyor lifts continuously take snow tubers back to t he top for more fun.
New this year at Hawksnest is a zip line. The zip line features 10 cables, two of which are known in the zip line industry as “super” or “mega” zips.
Zip line enthusiasts enjoy the exhilaration of gliding over valleys with expansive views, while threading through the forest canopy.
In Sugar Mountain, the Sugar Mountain Resort is celebrating 40 years this season. The resort opened in 1969 with four lifts and 11 slopes for skiing. Since then, Sugar has grown to include seven lifts and 20 slopes for skiers and snowboarders. Winter activities have expanded to include snowshoeing, tubing and ice skating.
In Beech Mountain, upgrades by the Costin family has brought a new level of skiing to the area. In the past two years, the family has spent more than $2 million in upgrades, including improvements in equipment, infrastructure and customer service.
Beech Mountain resort features 15 trails on 95 skiable acres. Those trails are serviced by 10 lifts, including the only high-speed quad lift in North Carolina. Another unique aspect is the alpine village located at the base of the slopes.
