LULA – James Richard Turner, 74, died Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Born on June 11, 1935, in Hall County, he was the son of the late Claud L. and Rader Dodd Turner. He was a retired engineer from the Georgia Department of Transportation and attended the Lula Worship Center. He was very active in his community and was former president and a founding member of the Lula Area Betterment Association. He was an avid gardener and fisherman, and was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Mr. Turner was preceded in death by brothers, Lester Turner, Clyde Turner and Benny Turner; and sisters, Imogene Lewallen, Altheda Davis and Joyce Burke.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Merle Turner, Lula; daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and David Bowen, Clermont, Karen and Brad Raper, Lula; sister, Margie Nell Colbert, Gainesville; brother, Roy Turner, Lula; grandchildren, Charles Bowen and his wife, Amanda, Lula, Melissa Bowen, Clermont, James Raper and Lauren Raper, Lula; and great-grandchildren, Rebecca Bowen and Garrison Bowen, both of Lula.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 28, at 4 p.m. from Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Revs. Bobby Griffin and Jacob Armour officiating. Burial will be in the Antioch Holiness Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, January 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center, 2150 Limestone Pkwy., Suite 222, Gainesville, GA 30501.

Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, is in charge of arrangements.
