The Leopards are still looking for their first win of the season and wants it to come against long-time rival Commerce.
Banks’ head coach Mike Ruth said, “I don’t care if we were shooting marbles with Commerce, we want to beat ‘em. It is good clean competition, we go to battle with each other.“
Commerce and Banks did not play last season, but during the 07-08 season Banks won both meetings between the schools. This year, the Tigers are 1-1 leading into Friday’s game. Banks will play host with the boys game starting at 8:30 p.m. following the girl’s at 7 p.m.
Ruth is looking forward to the game and is confident that if the Leopards play like they did in the recent Dawson County game, Banks should have a great shot at winning.
“Coach Chad Bridges is doing a heck of a job with the Commerce bunch. He has them ready to play,” said Ruth. “It will be a war, but I feel good about our chances to compete.”
The optimism for a good game comes in part to the recent improvements seen by Ruth in the Rabun County game last Friday and Tuesday’s game with Dawson County. While Banks came out on bottom in both games, there were visible improvements on the court and in attitude.
“We hate to lose, but we are still in a learning process,” Ruth said, adding that with an overall good effort Banks can keep a game tight at the end.
“Basketball is a game of runs, you take yours and we will take ours, as long as we can stay close at the end you have a shot to win.”
While Friday night can go either way, one thing is for certain that the fans will get a good show.
“We play Banks County basketball,” said Ruth. ”We play our way and let the chips fall.”
