Early taxes to be accepted in December

Banks County taxpayers can make early payments on their property tax before the bills are sent out.
The property tax bills have not been sent out yet because the tax digest has not been completed. However, taxpayers may go by tax commissioner Margaret Ausburn’s office and pay the same amount of taxes they owed last year. This amount will be deducted from the bills when they are sent out and the taxpayers will only be billed for any increases.

"The property tax bills have not been sent out yet because the tax digest has not been completed".
What's new???
This has been happening for at least the past 4 years.
Every time I have to "pre-pay" my property tax bill, it causes confusion with my mortgage company and inconvenience to me. Haven't the taxpayers of Banks county endured this gross incompetence long enough? Isn't there any one within the Banks county government with enough intelligence to correct this problem? Someone needs to be held accountable...and sooner better than later.

Because the Commissioners wanted to raise the taxes, thats what put them in a bind every year. The school also waits till December to raise the millage. To your blame is not the tax commissioner. It is the end of year. Why don't you understand that budgets have to met for the end of year.

the tax commissioner is an idiot she lost the money last year and the sheriff said dont report it until after the election

The Banks County Board of Education unanimously approved a tentative millage rate of 13.244 mills at the monthly meeting on Thursday, Nov. 12. This is the same millage rate as last year, superintendent Chris Erwin reported. Sounds like it WASN'T in December.
As for the BOC & tax hikes, those who run the county should have enough sense to stagger their fiscal year so this year-end conflict (if it exists at all) can be avoided.

But to solve the issues of the tax digest is the tax acessors office that is resposible for our tax digest.

The problem is the tax assessors think they can use their auth. and do what they wish. The chief appraiser and the entire bunch should be replaced. They run around all over the county trying to find if anyone added a new window or re-painted his house so taxes could be raised instead of working in the office and trying to find out why $2,000,000.00 worth of re-estate was omitted from the tax digest. Only one person in the assessors office lives in Banks County anyway. Get a broom.

Sweetie, I hope you read the newspaper. The property you mentioned was NOT omitted. Get the facts straight! And BTW, if the assessor's office were not so sorely understaffed, they wouldn't be spread so thin. When the appraisers have to double as secretary/clerk, then how are they supposed to do their field work? And people are asking for furlough days?? Banks County Government isn't big enough to cover all the bases if it comes to that. Get ready for compromised service if it comes to furlough days folks!!

Wow! Must have hit a nerve from within the tax office.Yep, get ready for furlough days for they are coming. State revenue down 16% for November and black friday was a disaster. the Gov. said today, education will be cut again the 1st week of Jan. and other budgets will follow. You may be sweeping the floor and emptying the trash can before its gets any better. We can get somebody on food-stamps to do the secretary/clerks job if needed.

Actually, I don't work there. And good for the current staff if they have to emty their own trash. That won't hurt them a bit. But furlough days will compromise the service that tax payers EXPECT from the government. So go ahead and stop your whining now. Come what may...just don't expect any more from a smaller staff. Some folks need to use their head for more than a place to hang their hat!

Sounds like someone at the tax assessors office is mad---well so are the taxpayers!! Joe Barefoot said that there were serious flaws found in the tax digest because some properties were not listed and the assessors office needed time to correct the problem. Sounds like we already have compromised service at the assessors office--a few furlough days sure won't hurt and maybe more will get done on the true work days.

So, tax payer, is that a slam on the food-stamps recipient or the position of the secretary/clerk?? Because I doubt very seriously that someone drawing food stamps would be willing to work for free. Or maybe you were implying that a good place to cut the budget would be the custodian position. I can go along with that. Here's an FYI for you: the primary reason that county school teachers are taking furlough days is because the STATE is short of funds and can not extend money to the schools as usual. The county government hasn't had to take the extreme measure of furlough days YET, but that doesn't mean they won't. For all of those screaming and crying "the county school teachers are taking furlough days, why shouldn't the county workers?!?!"- please keep in mind that the county schools aren't getting the normal funding from the state, whereas the county government doesn't operate off of state funds to begin with.
