BALDWIN - Henry Seaborn Carlan, 91, of the Hollingsworth Community, died Sunday, November 29, 2009.
Born in Banks County on December 13, 1917, he was the son of the late Henry and Ola Pruitt Carlan of Banks County. Mr. Carlan was preceded in death by brothers, Fletcher Carlan, Felton Carlan, Farris Carlan, Marvin Carlan; and sisters, Margaret Carlan Free, Nettie Mae Carlan Collins, and Grace Carlan Lewallen. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cornelia, was a member of the Southern Baptist Men's Sunday School Class, and was a Sunday School greeter at his church. Mr. Carlan was a York Rite and Scottish Rite Mason, a Shriner of the Yaarrab Temple in Atlanta, a member of Hollingsworth Lodge No. 355 F & AM and was a Past Patron of Habersham Chapter No. 480, Order of the Eastern Star. He was charter member of Lanier Scottish Rite Club in Gainesville and a charter member of the Mountaineer Shrine Club in Cornelia. Mr. Carlan was retired from the Lee Arrendale State Prison. He spent 37 years in law enforcement. During his career, he served as a Wildlife Ranger, and was Deputy Sheriff for the Banks County Sheriff's Office, Chief of Police of Cornelia for six years and was Chief of Police of Baldwin for four years. Mr. Carlan served a number of years as Poll Manager of the Hollingsworth Voting Precinct. He was a 20 year volunteer with the Hollingsworth Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Carlan was a hay farmer and enjoyed peddling watermelons.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mozelle Nunnally Carlan, Baldwin; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was the last member of his immediate family.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, at First Baptist Church of Cornelia, with T. Logan Smith, the Revs. David Turner and Gene Todd officiating. Burial will follow in the Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Frank Sailors officiating and Masonic Grave Rites provided by the Hollingsworth Masonic Lodge # 355 F & AM.
The family will receive friends at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1.
