The Banks County Board of Commissioners met in closed session for four hours Friday to discuss “potential litigation.” No action was taken when the meeting was open to the public. It has not been revealed who is threatening a lawsuit against the county but “potential litigation” has been discussed in several recent closed-door meetings.
The only legal reasons to meet in closed session are potential/pending litigation, purchasing or selling property and personnel issues related to hiring and firing a specific employee. All other discussions must be in public. Any action taken or votes must be made in open session.
Elected officials who discuss items other than those allowed or who vote in closed session can be charged with violating the Georgia Open Meetings Law.
I guess we are supposed to just trust our elected officials to be honest, eh?
I'm sure that none of the people elected to city councils or boards of commissioners would EVER do anything illegal, now would they?
