Atlanta getaway: Fox Theatre, The Melting Pot highlight of visit

With more people staying closer to home for vacations and weekend get-aways, Atlanta beckons North Georgia residents with its wonderful entertainment, fine dining and other area attractions. Located less than one hour away, it’s also a great destination for a night out. But there is so much to do and see that you will want to make it a weekend destination.

The majestic Fox Theatre offers top-notch entertainment year-round. “42nd Street” starring Loretta Swit of “MASH” fame was presented last week. Other productions include “Grease,” starring Taylor Hicks, and “Chicago,” starring Jerry Springer.

An evening at the Fox should start with a wonderful dining experience at The Melting Pot, located just two blocks from the theater. The Melting Pot offers a fun interactive fondue experience with wonderful cheese, entrees and chocolate options.

On a recent visit, we chose the fondue feast which is a four-course meal that starts off with cheese fondue. We took our server, Amanda’s, suggestion and tried the Wisconsin Trio Cheese Fondue. It was the perfect start to our meal. Fontina, Butterkase and Buttermilk Bleu Cheeses with white wine, scallions and a hint of sherry make for a wonderful combination that is great for dipping apples, bread and vegetables.
Next up, we had salads. The Caesar Salad, which had encrusted pine nuts for a great twist, and the California Salad, with the wonderful black walnut vinaigrette dressing were great choices. Both were light and perfect for the second course.

We selected the coq au vin cooking style for our main entrée and it had a wonderful blend of fresh herbs, mushrooms, garlic and spices. The main entrée for the fondue fest includes filet mignon Florentine, limoncello balsamic sirloin, shrimp Diablo, sun-dried tomato chicken, orange fennel pork tenderloin, porcini and Portobello sacchetti and fresh vegetables. It was all great but we agreed the shrimp Diablo was our favorite.

For dessert, which was our favorite course, we chose the Disaronna Meltdown, a decadent mixture of silky white chocolate swirled with amaretto and flambéed tableside. For dipping, you get a tray of brownies, cheesecake, marshmallows, strawberries, bananas and pound cake.

The Midtown location has modern décor consisting of dark woods and draped rich colors that creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. The wonderful service, relaxed Midtown location and great food all add together to make for a fun evening out. Whether it’s a romantic dinner for two or a large group of family and friends, it’s a wonderful place to start your night out in Atlanta.

The Melting Pot is located at 754 Peachtree St. NE, Suite 100, between 4th and 5th streets. For more information, call 404-389-0099 or check out the website at www.themeltingpot.com.
AT THE FOX
After this one-of-a-kind dining experience, stroll down the street for an evening at the theater. Here’s what’s coming up for the 2009 season from Theater of the Stars:

•“Grease” will be presented Aug. 7-16. Platinum-selling recording artist and “American Idol” winner, Taylor Hicks, will join the production as “Teen Angel” beginning on Tuesday, August 11. Hicks made his Broadway debut in the role of “Teen Angel.” The new production of “Grease” features songs from the smash hit 1978 motion picture for the first time ever in a Broadway production including “Sandy,” the Academy Award nominated song “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” “Grease” and “You’re the One That I Want.”

•”Chicago” will be presented Sept 8 – Sept 13 and will feature television personality Jerry Springer. There’s never been a better time to experience “Chicago,” Broadway’s razzle-dazzle smash. This triumphant hit musical is the recipient of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy and thousands of standing ovations.

•”The Color Purple” starring Fantasia of American Idol will be presented Sept. 15-27.

•”Rain, A Tribute To The Beatles,” Oct 6 – Oct 11. They look like them and they sound like them. All the music and vocals are performed live. “Rain” covers the Fab Four from their earliest beginnings through the psychedelic late 60s and their long-haired hippie, hard-rocking rooftop days. “Rain” is a multi-dimensional experience…a fusion of historical footage and hilarious television commercials from the 1960s lights up video screens and live cameras zoom in for close-ups. Sing along with your family and friends to such Beatlemania favorites as “Let It Be,” “Hey Jude,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Come Together,” and “Can’t Buy Me Love.”

•Radio City’s Christmas Spectacular featuring The Rockettes will be presented Nov. 19.Dec. 6. A holiday favorite of children and adults alike, it is a great way to celebrate the season.

Tickets are on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticketmaster.com.” For more information, call 404-252-8960 or go to www.theaterofthestars.com.

I love the melting pot. Its a little on the expensive side for the "big night out", but its really worth it. Don't eat for at least a day or two before you go or else you will be sorry.
