GAINESVILLE – Claud Daniel Matthews, 92, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, following an extended illness.
Born on March 7, 1917, in Barrow County, he was the son of the late Claud “Red” M. and Martha “Mattie” Daniel Matthews, and lived most of his life in Hall County. He retired from Gainesville Mill after 42 years of service and was of the Baptist denomination. Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by brothers, Rex Matthews and J.C. Matthews; and a sister, Ruby Smith. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle, loved ones stated.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Dorothy “Francine” Matthews, Gainesville; children, Claudette Kittle and Martha Jo Palmer (Lamar), all of Monroe, Charles Jenkins (Shelia), Talmo, Chris Daniel Matthews (Bettyann), Flowery Branch; sister, Sallie Lou Chapman, Gainesville; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 28, in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with the Revs. Charles Jenkins and Raleigh Parks officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery in Banks County at a later date.
Memorial Park Funeral Home, Gainesville, was in charge of arrangements.
