Homer residents will begin paying more for their water as of July 1. The Homer City Council unanimously approved an increase in water rates at the monthly council meeting on Tuesday, June 9.

The new residential rate will be $13 for the first 3,000 gallons and $4 per 1,000 gallons over the 3,000. The old rate was $10 for the first 3,000 gallons and $3 per 1,000 over the first 3,000.

The new commercial rate is $25 for the first 3,000 gallons and $5.50 per 1,000 over the first 3,000. The old rate was $20 for the first 3,000 gallons and $4.50 per 1,000 gallons over.

The new hydrant rate is $5.50 per 1,000 gallons, compared to the old rate of $4.50 per 1,000 gallons.

While the new rates will take effect on July 1, the new charges will appear on the bill in August.

The increase is necessary to balance the water fund budget, Mayor Doug Cheek said on Tuesday.

You have got to be kidding.Times are hard enough.Leave it up to the county to take advantage. We have to pay or there is no water.

It's easier to have a well instead of paying for water that leaks around the meter outside.
