CORNELIA – Octie Slaton, 94, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at her residence following a sudden illness.
Born in Franklin County on June 9, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Lumuel and Rachel Morgan Kennedy. She was employed by Lumite Corporation, Standard Telephone Company and Cornelia Broom Company prior to her retirement and was a member of the Hunters Creek Baptist Church.
Mrs. Slaton was preceded in death by her husband, Tyrus W. Slaton; brothers, Thurmond Kennedy, Norman Kennedy, Clyde Kennedy and Howard Kennedy; sisters, Emma Brown, Maybelle Slaton, Frankie Fulgum, Madge Lockhart and Morene Haley.
Survivors include her daughters, Bobbie White, Baldwin, and Merle Little, Gainesville, son, Dr. Billy Slaton, Cornelia; grandchildren, William Slaton, David Slaton, Cassandra De Veau, Robert Slaton, Joe Kenyon, Michael Roach, Edward Roach, Will Smith and Danny Smith; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, in the chapel of Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with the Rev. Darvin Slaton officiating. Burial will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 29.
